Obituary for Mary Helen Peterson

Mary Helen Peterson
Of Arlington Heights

Mary Helen Peterson was born on June 7, 1944 in Chicago, IL to Raymond and Marie (nee McDermott) O'Connell. She died Friday, December 15, 2017 in Arlington Heights.

Mrs. Peterson retired in 2006 from St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, where she was a math teacher for nearly 30 years. Mary Helen and her husband Rick have been parishioners of St. Edna Catholic Church in Arlington Heights since 1978 where they were Eucharistic Ministers and enjoyed the Couples Bowling League. She was a loyal friend who enjoyed frequent lunches with high school girlfriends, tap dancing at the senior center, playing mahjong, bridge, and catching up over dinner and drinks. Mary Helen was happiest spending time with her six children, their spouses and fourteen grandchildren. She was the grandma constantly cheering in the stands at baseball, hockey and football games, and applauding at the end of cheerleading competitions, dance recitals, band and chorus concerts, and school plays. She had a very vibrant personality, was always available to lend a helping hand, and quickly turned strangers into friends.

Mary Helen is survived by her husband of 52 years Richard; children, Jeff (Marcia) Peterson, Tim (Susan) Peterson, Lori (Joe) Bolsinger, Chris (Steve) Schumacher, Eric (Jennifer) Peterson and Mark (Annie) Peterson; grandchildren, Kelly (fiancé Mitch Deakins) Peterson, Kyle Peterson, Allie Schumacher, Brett Peterson, Zach Schumacher, Derek Peterson, Brooke Bolsinger, Sam Schumacher, Noah Peterson, Jack Bolsinger, Payton Peterson, Trevor Peterson, Kye Parker Peterson, Ryder Peterson; sisters-in-law, Margaret O'Connell, Lynn (Rudy Martinez) Peterson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Raymond O'Connell.
