Obituary for Theresa Julia Barrett

Theresa Julia Barrett
Of Chicago

Theresa Julia Barrett was born on June 6, 1971 in Arlington Heights, Illinois. She died Friday, November 16, 2018 at home in Arlington Heights surrounded by her family.

Theresa is survived by her mother, Nora T. Barrett (nee Mulvihill); her siblings Dan (Chris) Barrett, Margaret (Peter) Kohl, John Barrett and Brian (Michaela) Barrett; she was also a loving aunt to Conor, Daniel, Emily, Rory, and Abigail Barrett.

Theresa attended St. James School, Marillac Academy and graduated from Buffalo Grove High School. Her love of the arts took her to Columbia College in Chicago where she graduated in 1999. She had a successful career highlighted by three of her most impactful roles. At NBC 5 Chicago, Theresa started as an intern for Dick Kay and ended up as a writer and editor for the morning news. For 13 years, she called NBC 5 Chicago home and covered many local, national and international events. She loved the energy, creativity and spontaneity of the daily news cycle. Theresa continued her media career as an associate producer for the “Back on the Beat” radio show with WCPT. Her last role was as a Human resource manager at Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology with the University of Chicago. She worked alongside the doctors and staff that were working to find a cure for cancer. She retired in 2018 to focus on her own care.

Theresa adored her family and her dog Jack! She loved all things Ireland, including visiting relatives, the country side and the craic. She also enjoyed the outdoors, long car rides, Ska music, fresh flowers, writing, painting, rowing, spoiling her nieces and nephews and a cup of tea next to a warm fire. She was a warm, thoughtful, caring soul.

She cherished her experience with the First Descents, an adventure group for young adults with cancer. She went on two of their adventure trips in 2011, met and made dear friends, and she came to embody their motto: “Out Living It”. They called her “Red Writer”, a nod to her flowing red hair and talented writing skills.
