Obituary for Rita L. Maves

Rita L. Maves
Of Arlington Heights

Rita Lois Maves (nee Casey) passed away on Wednesday October 30, 2019.

She was born on a farm near New London, Wisconsin on March 30, 1937. She graduated from New London High School and went on to the University of Wisconsin Stout where she earned a degree in home economics. Rita was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. While at Stout she met and later married her husband, Gordon. Following graduation, Rita assumed a teaching position at the Arlington High School. She left teaching in 1960 to raise her children. After her four children were in school, Rita returned to teaching in District 214. Her dedicated work at John Hersey High School was well received by the hundreds of students with whom she had contact. Rita taught the Home Economics Related Occupations classes which started many students on their careers.

During her teaching career Rita found time to instruct many adults in the art of clothing construction in the community education program. This became an evening-out social program for many ladies who returned for several sessions. Rita will be remembered for her baking skills. Over the years Rita produced hundreds of loaves of Irish soda bread and Christmas coffee cakes which she shared with family and friends. Rita was a Eucharistic minister at her church and was honored for her community service work with the Paul Harris Fellow award given by Arlington Heights Rotary Club.

Rita is survived by her husband of 60 years Gordon. She also leaves son Timothy (Karen) Maves, daughter Katherine (Steven) Pace, son Thomas (Erin) Maves and grandchildren Jessica, Michael, Jeffrey, Eric, Ryan, Kayla, Clare, Rachel and Anders, and great grandchildren Liam, Maxwell and Arthur Gordon. She is survived by her siblings Jerry (Anita) Casey, Don (Darlene) Casey, Sally (Bill) Carew, Jim (Mary Ellen) Casey, Doug (Cindy) Casey, Darla (Tom) Ironside and Mark (Teri) Casey. Rita was preceded in death by son, John Martin Maves and her parents, Harold and Dolores Casey.

Rita devoted her life to giving to others. She was dearly loved by family and friends. Rita was most happy when she was entertaining all her family and friends. She was the ultimate hostess. Her giving heart will be deeply missed.
