Obituary for Harry Childs

Harry Childs died at home on August 26, 2018. He was born March 22, 1952 to Hedwig Renn Childs and the late Harry Childs of Darlington. He was preceded in death by his brother Gregory.

 Mr. Childs graduated from Northwestern High School in 1970 and received his BS in Civil Engineering from Penn State University.  As a construction manager he worked for E.G. Smith, Walgreen Co, and Crown Cork & Seal. 

Harry married Janet Duff in 1978.  They made their home in Palatine IL where they raised two children, Meghan and Sam.  He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, a private pilot and member of aviation clubs. Harry was a loving son, husband, father, and brother.  Watching his children grow was his greatest delight. He was a skilled craftsman. Harry loved entertaining in his home. Guests always enjoyed his loving manner, creative cooking skills, and masterful story-telling.

 Surviving are his wife, Janet Duff Childs of Palatine, IL; his daughter Meghan Naylor and husband Kenneth of Chicago, IL; his son Sam Childs and wife Kara of Chicago IL.Also surviving are his mother, Hedwig Childs and his sister, Hedy Pflug. 

The family wishes to thank the staff of Northwest Oncology and Alexian Brothers Ambulatory Care Department where Harry was known for his spiritual faith and determination throughout the four years of his pancreatic cancer treatment.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church or Pancreatic Cancer Action Network www.pancan.org.

 Friends and family are welcome to attend Celebrations of Harry’s life. The first celebration is on Saturday September 8, 2018, with Memorial visitation from 11:30 am until the 12:30 pm Service at Mt Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 718 Market Street, Darlington, PA. The second celebration is on Saturday September 29, 2018 with Memorial Visitation from 3:30 pm until the 4:30 pm Service. at First United Methodist Church, 123 N Plum Grove Road, Palatine, IL.
