Obituary for Barbara R. Murphy

Barbara R. Murphy
Of Arlington Heights

Barbara R. Murphy, 76, died on Thursday, March 28, 2019 in the presence of her loving family. Barb was born in Denver, Colorado, but she and her husband, Jim, made Arlington Heights their home shortly after her graduation from Northwestern University, from where she received a Master’s Degree in Audiology. At Northwestern, Barb was a member of the Chi Omega sorority, and the friendships she made there have endured over the years.

Barb was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, whose true joy was in her friends and family. She loved taking vacations with her family - Winter Park and Rocky Mountain National Park were her favorite destinations, but her adventures also took her to many countries around the world. She shared this love of travel with her children and grandchildren. Barb’s husband, Jim, was her rock and lifelong best friend and partner. Her devotion to her children and grandchildren was beyond compare. “Grammy” played a pivotal role in the lives of her four grandchildren, who brought her such tremendous joy. She was committed to opening the world to them, ensuring their days together were filled with fun and educational outings and events.

Barb was a pioneer in her field and had a distinguished career in educational audiology, much of which was spent at the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL) as the Coordinator of Audiological Services. Prior to working at SEDOL, Barb was Assistant Director of the Children’s Hearing Clinic at Northwestern University. She was dedicated to the evaluation and habilitation of children with hearing loss and was an invaluable resource to families and colleagues. She served as President of the Chicago Speech-Language Hearing Association and the Illinois Academy of Audiology. She was a founder of the Illinois Educational Audiology Association and collaborated with many pediatric audiologists throughout the country. Since her retirement in 2003, she maintained active participation in professional organizations and served on the Rush University Au.D. Advisory Board. She was always a strong advocate for families of children who were deaf or hard of hearing, a tireless supporter of comprehensive school-based audiology services, and genuine friend and colleague of many. Barb was part of a loving group of friends and fellow audiologists, who called themselves the “Breakfast Club”.

Barb is survived by her spouse of 53 years, James B. Murphy; her daughter Christine (Patrick) Buzzard; her son Kyle (Adrienne) Murphy; her grandchildren Hailey Buzzard, Jack Murphy, Ben Murphy, and Joey Murphy; as well as her sister Mary Kay (Daniel) Schatz. She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Jakeita Richard.
