Obituary for William R. Frey

William R. Frey, 77, of Palatine, passed away on September 21, 2017.

Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Gloria (Reichmann); his children, Lisa (Gary) Brown, Jennifer (Michael) Romano, and Greg (Kristina) Frey; and his grandchildren, Christina, Zoe, Jenna, Jonathan, Joey, and Mary. He is also survived by sisters Audrey Smith and Jane Burroughs, and brother Jim Frey.

Bill was born on November 25, 1939, on his family’s farm in northern Ohio, the son of Albert and Sarah (Dunbar) Frey, and the youngest of nine children.

Bill served in the Navy from 1957 - 1960, and married Gloria Reichmann in 1962.
He graduated from Indiana Tech and had a long career at Motorola and GTE/Verizon as an engineer, working on some of the very earliest iterations of cell phone technology. Bill retired in 2002 to enjoy time with his family, golf, and travel.

Bill truly delighted in his children and grandchildren and was close with every one of them. His children fondly recall riding on his shoulders as he swam laps at Olympic Park Pool, his patient help with homework, his ability to fix all that they broke, his presence at all of their games and activities, and most of all his unwavering emotional support through their lives. He was a constant presence at his grandchildren’s recitals, performances, and cermonies over the years.

Bill was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights for much of his life. He chaired the capital and construction committees that oversaw the expansion of the church in the 1980s. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed many days with his golf groups at Palatine Hills Golf Course. Bill was also a familiar face to many in the community from serving as an election day poll worker for the past decade, and from his daily walks through his neighborhood.

Bill’s family will hold a private ceremony of interment of ashes at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Columbarium. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
