Obituary for Shirley Marie Wendorf

Shirley Marie Wendorf was born on Sept. 7, 1922, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., to Edward and Laura (nee Belter) Schmidt. She passed into eternity on Friday, March 2, 2018, at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights.

Shirley was a devoted servant of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She prayed fervently, was the beloved matriarch of her family and was a friend to many. Shirley devoted much of her life to her husband, Milton, and to raising her six children. She was an excellent woman. Shirley was an example of patient, persevering godliness in all seasons. She had a delightful sense of humor that was as uplifting as it was intelligent. She loved the Lord deeply and trusted Him completely. Shirley well knew that any good in her life was the fruit of her Lord’s merciful grace.

Shirley was an eminently wise woman. She knew that biblical wisdom is skill for living rooted in relationship with the Lord. Fittingly, her favorite Scripture was Psalm 91.

Those who loved Shirley miss her terribly, but they know she is where she has longed to be, safely home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Shirley is survived by her children Rev. Kenton (Janice) Wendorf, Joyce (Gordon) Zwirkoski, Lorie Effio, Todd (Carla) Wendorf and Sara (Don) Hessler. Also, grandchildren Rev. Nathan (Kristine) Wendorf, Daniel (Krista) Wendorf, Naomi (Joshua) Peterson, Jason (Kelli) Zwirkoski, Matthew (Kara) Zwirkoski, Rachel Zwirkoski, Sarah Zwirkoski, Janelle (Ron) Simko, Dr. Kristen (Dr. Jonathan) Sorg, Jared (Elaine) Wendorf, Kaley Wendorf, Brandon (Amanda) Best, Jordan (Fiancé Tiffany Kessler)  Best, Ian Hessler, Evan Hessler, Richard Hessler. Also, great-grandchildren Jonathan, Tabitha, Caleb, Lydia, Kensie, Luke, Dylan and Brynn Wendorf; J.J. and Grace Peterson; Lennox and Vance Zwirkoski; Hazel and Ada Sorg; Eliana Simko, Isla Best and Anna Hessler; her sister, Alta Wachs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; son, Ned; sister, Joyce; brother, George; her parents and great-grandson, David Peterson.

Visitation will be at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, in the chapel of the Lutheran Home, 800 W. Oakton, Arlington Heights, Ill. A memorial service celebrating Shirley’s life will begin at 9:15 a.m. Interment will follow.
