Obituary for Rosa DiGioia

Rosa passed away on Friday Dec. 1, 2017 at 5:30 am at her home in Arlington Heights, after a short battle with cancer. Rosa was born Rosa Angela Mastrodomenico on January 17, 1934 to Paolo Antonio and Maria Adorata (nee Tenerelli) Mastrodomenico in Ceglie del Campo (Bari) Italy, and was one of five children; Genaro “Jerry”; Angela “Lellina”; Maria and; Salvatore “Sonny”. Rosa survived war-torn Italy and had to cease her education after the third grade in light of the war, however, this never held her back in any way. Times were extremely difficult during the war years especially since her father Paolo spent ten years as an Italian prisoner in the African war as a barber tending to military personnel. Rosa shared one “fancy” dress with her two sisters as they would alternate attending church services wearing the same dress. A family friend who Rosa referred to as “Comara Domenica” tutored her in knitting, crocheting, making design applications for tablecloths, bed-sheets and pillow-cases. Rosa remained “crafty” with her hands throughout her life knitting baptism gowns, jackets, caps and booties for infants and slippers for adults. In 1951 Rosa journeyed to America via ship and met her husband Saverio “Sam” DiGioia in Chicago. Sam was from Cellamare, Bari, Italy. They were married for nearly 57 years until his death in March 2013 at the age of 81. They resided in Chicago 1956-65; Niles 1965-95 and in Arlington Heights 1995-present. Besides being a full-time mother and homemaker Rosa worked in various factories: Sawyer’s Cookie & Cracker Co. 1951-52; Tip Top Bakery 1952-55; Florsheim Shoes 1956; Monogram Toy Models 1971-72 and; Little Fuse 1972-95. She enjoyed cooking, baking and playing cards (especially “La Scopa”). Rosa is survived by her daughter, Arcangela “Lina” Zivoli; son Michael (Luis Krause) DiGioia; grandchildren Maria and Rosangela Zivoli; sister Lellina (Sebastiano) Arpino; Brother Salvatore “Sonny” (Linda) Mastrodomenico and several sister and brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews.
