Robert H. Schmid
Of Arlington Heights

Robert H. Schmid, 90, passed away peacefully, August 22, 2017.  He was born in Chicago Dec. 25, 1926 to Harry and Myrtle (Grund) Schmid. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 64 years, Ruth H. Schmid, and leaves behind a son, Steven (Diana) and daughter, Susan (James) Thomson and five granddaughters, Kristen, Donna, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Katherine, and one great granddaughter, Charlotte.

Bob graduated from Chicago’s Austin High School, where he was also enrolled in the Junior ROTC program. He enlisted into military service, in late 1944, and served in the USAAF Air Transport Command. After undergoing basic training and aviation education, at Keesler Field, in Biloxi, MS, he was assigned to Hickam Field, in Honolulu, where, as a mechanic, he helped maintain C-46 and C-54 aircraft.Robert met his future wife, Ruth H. Prussat, in 1949. The two were married in Ascension Church (Chicago), on May 26, 1951.Robert worked for Illinois Bell, and then Ameritech, as a craftsperson and then engineer from 1949-1985. He commuted from his home in Mount Prospect to the Randolph Street location via the C&NW railway.Robert was an assistant scoutmaster for Scout Troops in Chicago and Mount Prospect.  He also worked on the Mt. Prospect Clean Streams Commission which, among other items, addressed flooding issues that surfaced, in the community, in the late 1960s and early 1970s.He and his wife loved time with family and enjoyed traveling in the US and Canada. They moved to The Moorings of Arlington Heights, in 2013, after living in their Mount Prospect home for 57 years.  They found The Moorings to be a very friendly and welcoming community. Bob became known as the “puzzle man” of the third floor for his love of working on jigsaw puzzles.Last year, Bob was thrilled to participate in a two-day Honor Flight to Washington, DC, with his son-in-law, James Thomson IV.  He enjoyed meeting with other veterans and seeing many of the memorials and monuments, in the city.

Visitation Tuesday, August 29, 2017 from 9:30 AM until the time of funeral service at 10:30 AM at Southminster Presbyterian Church 916 E. Central Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60005.  Private interment for family will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery, in Arlington Heights. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Journey Care, The Moorings of Arlington Heights (Checks should be made to The Geneva Foundation), or Southminster Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights.
