Obituary for Paul John Kale

Paul J. Kale
Of Carpentersville

Paul J. Kale, born on May 10, 1925 in Chicago to Paul and Martha (nee Griffiths) Kale, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 in Barrington. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary (nee Krumbein) Kale.

Paul was the beloved father of Nancy (Michael) LaBay; cherished grandfather of Jessica (Scott) Ryan; and dear great-grandfather of Maggie and Lilah Ryan; loving brother of his twin sister, Margery (the late Anthony) Rodino and younger sister Carole (James) Quinlan; and fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.

For 32 years Paul worked as a representative of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in Chicago, making friends of co-workers and clients alike. His love, though, was the north woods of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and the family cabin on Hagerman Lake, where he retired in 1980. From 1941 when his parents bought the cabin, he spent every moment he could at the lake with his family. He was an expert lake and fly fisherman, and taught family members and friends to fish with joy. While retired up north, he enjoyed his hobby of handcrafted belts and buckles, which he sold at craft shows across the Upper Peninsula. Paul and Mary, his wife of 64 years, also loved to travel the southwest in retirement, especially the Phoenix area and San Diego. They moved their home from Michigan to Sun City West, Arizona, in 2003, where they enjoyed the warm weather, sunshine, and time spent with family members who had blazed the trail and settled west earlier.

Paul proudly served in the Navy in World War II on a destroyer escort in the Pacific. His stories of the battle of Okinawa, the surrender of Japan, and the typhoon his ship survived moved family members and friends. In 2013, he was thrilled to participate in an Honor Flight trip for veterans to Washington, D.C.
