Obituary for Margaret Helen Chaps

Margaret Helen Bowen Chaps

Margaret Helen Bowen Chaps, 101, was born on September 5, 1916 at Bowen’s Mill near Richland Center, Wisconsin to William Jennings and Bertha (Chitwood) Bowen. She passed away October 26, 2017 at Eagles Nest Assisted Living in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Margaret attended the Fairground School, a one-room country school near the Richland County Fairgrounds. At age 12, she placed first in both county and district spelling bees, qualifying for the state competition. In 1933, she graduated a year early from Richland Center High School. For the next several years, Margaret worked at the Richland County Courthouse to earn money to attend college. She attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she was active in the Phi Chi Theta commerce sorority and the Women’s Commerce Club. In 1941, she graduated with a B.A. from the UW School of Commerce. Following graduation, Margaret worked for Arthur Andersen & Co., a public accounting firm in Chicago. There she met her husband, Ben Chaps, whom she married on August 6, 1949. As a mother, Margaret involved herself in many of her children’s activities; she served as a Boy Scout den mother and employed her sewing expertise to create countless dance costumes. As a member of P.E.O. Chapter JX, she served as president of her chapter and area Round Table, and helped guide the State Membership Committee in an age without computers. She was an active member of Southminster Presbyterian Church where she served as a trustee. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, spending time with family and visits to her family’s farm in Wisconsin. She was a perfectionist and a diligent worker in every task she tackled and enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labor, often flowers, with others. Margaret was gracious, loved to smile and was grateful for all that she had.

Margaret is survived by her children Doug of Louisville, Colorado and Nancy (Stephen) Greenlee of Fort Collins, Colorado; five grandchildren: Seth (Iveta), Lyndsey and Kristyna Chaps of Colorado, Andrew (Nancy) Greenlee of Brooklyn, New York and Sarah Greenlee of Denver, Colorado; two great grandchildren Javier and Samantha Chaps of Louisville, Colorado; a sister, Joanne Hanson of Barrington, Illinois and many special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Ben, her sister Mary Bowen Sanford, her brother Frank Bowen and her parents.

Our family gives special thanks to Scott and Carrieann Williams, their children and the staff of Eagles Nest Assisted Living for their love and care of Margaret during her five year stay there.

A memorial service will take place at 11:00 am Thursday November 2, 2017 at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 916 Central Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60005. Visitation will precede the church service starting at 10:30 am. Interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery will follow the service.
