Herman F. Behls
Of Arlington Heights

Herman F. Behls, a resident of Arlington Heights since 1962, was born on September 23, 1929 in Chicago to Herman and Catherine (nee Kiesler) Behls. He died Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Northwest Community Hospital - JourneyCare Hospice, Arlington Heights.

Mr. Behls graduated from St. Michaels High School, Chicago in 1947. He received a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. Before retiring, Herman worked as a mechanical engineer for Sargent & Lundy Engineers and later was owner of Behls and Associates, an engineering consulting firm hired by Northwestern University. He served in the US Army during the Korean War.

Herman was a life time member of ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers. He was the recipient of many honors including College of Fellows (attained distinction for engineering projects of unusual or important scope) in 1995, Distinguished Service Award in 2001, Service to ASHRAE Research Award in 2013, and in 2016 he received the distinguished 50-year member award. Additionally, Herman was a member of the Sargent & Lundy Retired Men's Club, the St. James Church Retired Men's Club, Lifetime Member of the Lattof YMCA and was a long-time youth baseball coach for AHYAA.

Besides all things engineering, nothing brought Herman more joy than spending time with his family, especially if it involved water, boating, dinners, and attending any of his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was dearly loved by all.

Herman is survived by his wife, Dorothy (nee Ludtke), whom he married April 18, 1959 in Chicago; his children, David J. (Leslie) Behls, Suzanne B. (Joel) Fruendt and Richard J. (Jane Martin) Behls; his grandchildren, Nicholas K. Fruendt, Sara M. Fruendt, Megan A. Behls, Elizabeth N. Fruendt, Erin M. Behls, William R. Behls; his nieces, Catherine (John) Morrison, Caroline Frank, Joanne Marozza, Judy Herz, Jennifer (Robert) Cychosz, Andrea (Glenn Vanco) Vrahnos and his nephews, William (Mary) Ludtke and Kevin Vrahnos

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Rosemary C. Herz, and Dolores E. Wenglass.

Visitation from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois. Prayers 9:45 am, Monday, July 17, 2017 at the Funeral Home, proceeding to St. James Catholic Church, 831 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, Illinois for Mass at 10:30 am. Interment Maryhill Cemetery, Niles, Illinois.
