Obituary for Gena Maria Wilimczyk

Gena M. Wilimczyk
Of Prospect Heights

Gena M. Wilimczyk was born on January 2, 1922 in Kielce, Poland, to Jozef and Marianna (nee Kardas) Dziedzic. She died Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Tower Hill Nursing Home in South Elgin, Illinois.

Following the aftermath of Germany invading Poland during WWII, Gena was captured by the Germans and was sent to work in a hotel, in Stade, that housed Nazi & SS soldiers. It was there that she contracted rheumatic fever and survived with the help of a Nazi doctor.

When Germany lost the war, she was reunited with her husband, Henry Wilimczyk, who was imprisoned at the time in a concentration camp. With newly found freedom, they stayed in Germany to give birth to their daughter, Yolanda.

As Russia began taking over portions of the country, Gena, Henry & Yolanda fled to Brazil. There they built their own home in São Paulo and lived there for several years.

When friends of theirs would mention America, and when several began to move to Chicago, Henry decided it was time to take his family there. Chicago provided them with comfort and a wonderful future for their entire family.

Gena worked in the maintenance department within the bakery industry. She was a member of the Bakery and Confectionery Industry Union.

Gena is survived by her son-in-law, Wayne Franckowiak; grandchildren, James Franckowiak and Lisa W. (Dennis) Edler; great-grand-children, Branden and Brooklyn Edler; sister, Marianna Sojda; nephew, Richard Sojda; niece, Theresa Castellano.

She was preceded in death by her husband Henry K. Wilimczyk; daughter Yolanda Franckowiak; brothers, Gezy "George" and Zygmund Dziedzic; and her parents.
